Description:
Tiny rufous-brown crake with white markings, similar to Little Crake. Adult has rufous-brown upperparts, extensively marked with white. Flanks are barred. Bill and legs are green. Juvenile has buff underparts; compared with Little, wings are shorter, barring on underparts more extensive.
Distribution:
Common passage migrant through the western half of Gilgit-Baltistan, rarely in Baltistan. Prefers freshwater to saline wetlands or watercourses with dense vegetation or reed-beds, marshes and flooded meadows, up to 3000m during migration.
Behavior:
Forages on mud, probing and taking prey from surface, and in shallow water, occasionally to belly depth, immersing bill to seize prey; often forages while walking on floating vegetation and broken reeds, and while swimming. Feeds mostly on adult and larval aquatic insects; also molluscs, small crustaceans, small fish, green plant material, and seeds.
